Our New website, northcentralohioarchaeology.org Is now live. As I receive new information and items to post, I will update it. Right now you can get a basic idea of what it looks like and how to navigate it. I understand that some of you are not as computer savvy as others, but I have made it as simple and user friendly as possible. For right now I have also made the website so that anything that gets posted has to go through me, for accountability reasons and for content approval reasons. In addition to the website itself, I have created many social media accounts attached to the site as well. Including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube. I have done this for several reasons. The first reason being it makes it possible to see the content of the site from any platform you have. A phone, a computer, smart TV, or tablet. The second reason is some of these social media sites are more... readily available and gets news out faster and more efficiently than just the website could do by itself. Lastly, our website is pretty good, and in time it will be filled with pictures and articles, the calendar and contact page will be kept up to date with every event we can foresee, and once a good archive base is built, it will store our chapters past events and news so that it can be searched for and viewed indefinitely. However, as good as it is and will potentially become, having associated social media accounts gives us a broader platform in which to store and view any information we might wish. For example, having a YouTube page allows us save and post videos of chapter meetings, gatherings, and lectures given by special guests. I also plan on creating a video that I will post giving simple but detailed instructions on how to navigate our site and attached accounts, and what the benefits of each of them are. Having a Pinterest account allows us to store files of photos for a particular event, that can be viewed and shared on your computer at home, or on your smart phone. The added (unitentional) benefit of the social media accounts, is exposure. I believe that while the core website is really designed for us as a chapter, the social media sites will allow us to have a bit broader exposure and interest in the chapter, the society, and perhaps archaeology in general. As it has been said to me, this chapter is getting on in age, and there isn't a lot of new an upcoming (younger) archaeologists out there, and if there are, well we don't see them. However if we make ourselves more visible then perhaps it would catch the attention of interested people and the wealth of information you as experienced archaeologists will become available to them. I also want to throw in as a personal note, the notoriety that could possibly come with better exposure is much deserved for many of your accomplishments as individuals and as a chapter. I grew up around this stuff, and I took it for granted really. When I left this area though and joined the Navy, my world view opened up tremendously. One thing I found though, is that there is a fairly large interest in archaeology, people find it downright amazing sometimes. The problem is, is that the information and true understanding is not there for them because chapters like ours remain small, locally published, and unless you really know what your looking for online, lost in a maze of seemingly like but nowhere equal pages on the internet. I will be honored if I can help you take your chapter and knowledge to a wider audience, and it is my sincere hope that you do get the recognition you deserve.
Finally I would like to add, as the site is now, it's small and basic for a reason. It does however have the capability of being expanded almost infinitely. I can add more pages, more chapters, maps, picture files and galleries, and almost anything you can want or imagine a website to do. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have actually enjoyed making it, and I hope you get excited about it because really, it will only become as good as you want it to be. I can include any photo, article, event, or weblink you want. You just have to let me know, I will be more than happy to do my best and make it happen.
